Laboratory Studies
International space exploration
programs brought us to a stage where it is of great importance to study
physical, chemical, mineralogical and biological effects under
simulated space, cometary and planetary conditions in so called space
simulation facilities.
Coordinated studies of exobiological relevant projects in such facilities can cover the for instance following effects on molecules which are essential for life and various microorganisms:
- Low temperatures.
- Simulated solar UV radiation.
- X-ray exposure.
- Low pressures and dissection on a diversity of microorganisms.
- Surface oxidation of planetary soil analogues.
- Influence of organic molecules on ices.
- Etc.
One of the laboratories available for example, is the Cometary and Space Simulation chamber in Graz, Austria. Virtual Institute members can access a Directory with all Facilities available in Europe.
